I’m thinning out my collection, so it’s time for another person to enjoy this helmet.
This is a standard issue M1 ‘steel pot’ with a 1970’s maneuver cover. The numbers are for identification of soldiers who have been ‘killed’ in war games. The idea was to tell the referee that you had just shot number (77).
No two covers had the same number and could be reversed for green and tan ‘armies’. Of course, as soon as the MILES system came out, these were no longer used. The helmet’s camouflage cover band is marked to a ‘SCONCE’ and has the cat’s eyes in back turned into… well, cat’s eyes.
The helmet itself has been repainted several times and probably had the chin strap replaced / updated at least once. The shell is marked on the inside to a
‘Hansen, Art Sr.’ in marker with the German word (or another name) ‘FREUND’ crossed out in marker. This is over chalked ‘CJW’ initials. Evidently, the shell had been issued, turned in, reissued, etc.
Rear Seam, Swivel Bale, M1704 lift number.
The liner is a nice Firestone type with a complete suspension and the little studs for the chinstrap, which wasn’t in use in the 1970’s. There is a bull’s eye drawn on the very top of the liner’s shell on the outside. Paint on the liner is around 99%.
This is a NICE se tthat displays wonderfully. It is how I purchased it, but I can’t guarantee that all of the bits and pieces are associated (originally together). Still, the set shows actual use and even the senses of humor of the various soldiers to which it was issued.
Overall condition Very Good Plus to Excellent.
