Medical jars are small pear-shaped glass vessels used in medicine for the purpose of inducing a local rush of blood (usually for diseases of the thorax). The very procedure of placing the jars is associated primarily with folk medicine. The use of medical cupping has been borrowed from traditional Chinese medicine and is essentially a variant of bloodletting.
