I retired a number of years ago after spending the majority of my career working in testing and calibration labs and relocated to the northeast. I wrote calibration procedures and was the calibration procedure release focal for the largest aerospace manufacture in the U.S.A. My main area of expertise was in dimensional metrology. I also participated in writing many ASME B89 dimensional metrology standards.
I performed a “functional test” only of the amplifier.
1.)
Depressing the gage head, I was able to deflect the meter moment from left to right of full scale.
2.)
Using a Boeckeler 20 millionths micrometer head, I was able to perform a calibration and adjustment of the “gain” potentiometer on the amplifier on the +/-.010” range per the instruction manual.
NOTE: Normally the scale accuracies on electronic gaging amplifiers are closely correlated so that when you change from one range to another the accuracy will remain within acceptable limits. I decided however to perform an additional check on the +/-.002” scale using the Boeckeler micrometer head.
NOTE: I do not have the necessary N.I.S.T. traceable standards to provide a calibration/certification of the Federal EAS-1233 amplifier and EHE-
1048 gage head.
NOTE: I also performed an adjustment of the zero centering potentiometer. “
This means that once Zero adjustment has been made on the SHORT RANGE scale, size indication is correct on the other scales without resetting zero
.”
NOTE: The reversing mechanism on
some EHE series lever-type gage heads does not come with a positive stop (like some other EHE series lever gaging heads do) when rotating from an “over” measurement to an “under measurement. Therefore care should be taken when changing the direction of the gaging head to ensure full scale deflection and appropriate gaging force for optimum repeatability.
Due to its age, and the nature of vintage test equipment it is being sold “AS-IS”. All SALES ARE FINAL. NO RETURNS.
This listing is for the following:
(1)
Federal EAS-1233 electronic gaging amplifier and
(1)
Federal EHE-1048 gage head (with post back)
NOTE: There is some engraving on the front panel (see photos).
NOTE: There is a small hairline crack on the side of the case (see photo)
NOTE: The electrolytic capacitors in the gaging amplifier have been checked for value and leakage. As necessary, they have either been reformed or replaced.
NOTE: The 5.4V mercury cell battery pack which was normally furnished when this item was originally made has been replaced with a battery holder and (4) new Duracell “C” cell batteries.
NOTE:
In 1996, the United States Congress passed the “
Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act
”
that prohibited further sale of mercury-containing batteries unless manufacturers provided a reclamation facility, effectively banning their sale.
The features noted below are taken from Federal Products

ELECTRONIC GAGING AMPLIFIER
FEATURES:
“CLICK-SCALE” PRESENTATION…
Gives you your choice of magnifications without the confusion of multiple scale values. Turn the Range Selector Switch, and “Click-Scale” action (patented) makes visible the
one correct
set of scale values for the magnification you have selected. No chance of reading the wrong numbers or assigning the wrong values.
DUAL SPEED ELECTRICAL ZEROING…
long range approach and fine adjustment in one control for quicker, more convenient set-up. Coarse control A (outer skirt) is driven by knob B which provides independent fine adjustment when direction is reversed. This exclusive feature lets you master quickly without repositioning the gage head critically, even when height stand or fixture has no fine adjustment.
LINEAR RESPONSE…
So good that Federal electronic gages can be mastered at any point on the scale. No need for a nominal size master every time.
COMPLETELY SOLID STATE OPERATION…
All Federal Multi-Choice Amplifiers are transistorized for instant use, greater dependability, cooler operation.
ADJUSTABLE AMPLIFIER POSITION…
Swivel legs provide a stable support but let you adjust amplifier position for easier viewing. They double as carrying handle.
“230” STYLE AMPLIFIERS
BUILT-IN CIRCUIT TESTER –
shows overall gain of gage head- amplifier combination, not just battery voltage. Just turn Range Switch to first operating position and note whether meter hand is within “Gain OK” area. Gain readjustment is made quickly and conveniently through hole in knob.
TRULY PORTABLE –
each amplifier is its own carrying case. Compartment at back houses gage head, cord, and mounting accessories. Gage Head can be used with cover in place. Battery is readily accessible by removing compartment panel.
CHOICE OF MAGNIFICATIONS –
Three switch-selected scales provide popular combinations having at least 20 to 1 ratio between highest and lowest magnification to satisfy virtually every gaging requirement.

GAGE HEAD
LEVER TYPE
• For use on test stands, surface plate work, or where light pressure is needed.
• Reversing spring allows measurement in either direction.
• Clutch-mounted contact swivels through 200° arc for easy positioning.
• Involute shaped contact automatically corrects for cosine error up to 20°. Alternate contact tips are available**.
• Linearity – 0.1% over full range of ±.010”.
• Gaging pressure less than 4 grams.
• Repeatability better than 4µ”.
• Cable length – approximately 4 feet.
Model EHE-1048 gage head has approximately 2.5 - 4 grams gaging pressure, in either direction (knob on head reverses direction)… positive yet so light you don’t need cumbersome fixtures. Use regular test sets or height stands without the fear of lost motion.
Involute tip automatically corrects for cosine error when finger is at any angle up to 20°. Simplifies “reach over” jobs. Normally furnished. On regular set-ups angle of finger is no longer critical. Ball tip contact is optionally available, easy to substitute.
**
Contact Tips:
EPT-1004 Replacement Tip, .062” steel ball
EPT-1007 Replacement Tip, .031” tungsten carbide ball
EPT-1008 Replacement Tip, steel involute (normally furnished).
EPT-1013 Replacement Tip, .031” steel ball.
The “amplifier and gage head” will only be shipped by USPS priority mail within the U.S.A.
I will not ship to post office boxes, unconfirmed addresses or third parties.
I reserve the right to close the auction early in order to permit a local sale.
