A little history found on the intent
March, 1988, Banana Republic, at the time a retailer of travel and safari clothing and gear, launched a travel magazine called TRIPS.
Mel Ziegler, the magazine's editor-in-chief, founder and publisher, was the retired journalist who co-founded Banana Republic with his wife, Patricia earlier in the 1980's. "More than anything," the LA Times quoted him as saying, "TRIPS aims to reflect the store's attitude." The Journal Record also reviewed the magazine that month:
"The inaugural issue of TRIPS tells the reader what's in store in future editions and lists its intentions as well. As Mel Zeigler wrote in this first issue: 'Travel is experience. And the world is a wonder. It is to these bracing propositions that I dedicate TRIPS.'
With a whimsical and typically Banana Republic-an style, the cover of the first issue features a drawing by Mexico City-based artist Abel Quezada, with her cartoonish version of a beachfront complete with a reclining nude, steamship and airplane in the background over the sea and an elephant-borne scout next to a formal piA REPUBLIC TRIPS Magazine, No. 1 Spring 1988 Inaugural (and only!) Issue piano player.
The stories inside, with the first describing writer Charlie Hass' visit to the island kingdom of Tonga, are all superbly and interestingly illustrated and written.
The magazine covers a range of interests with stories on such exotic locales as Bangkok, to those less glamorous albeit just as interesting such as Little Rock, Ark., and the bland, intimidating country of Bulgaria.
Included in this premier issue is a photo essay shot by Hakan Ludwigsson on an Australian cattle station (ranch to us) as well as a wonderfully-written, incisive piece on South Africa by TRIPS staff writer, Mark Jacobson."
