Here we have an
Antique, Set of 2

ARNOLD
& SONS
,
and
MAW & SON Cased Traveling Medical Lancet Fleam & Scalpel
.

James Arnold established his
London
surgical instrument making business in
1819.
He brought his sons into the business in 1866and operated as Arnold & Sons until 1927.
In 1807, George Maw, from Lincolnshire, England, started a partnership with his wife’s cousin Hornby in Fenchurch Street.
In 1825 his sons John Hornby and Solomon joined him. Solomon brought in his son Charles in 1860 and the business became S. Maw and Son.
The company operated primarily from 1807 – 1901

Both of these instruments are marked by the maker.
These
instruments
were used from the 17th century until the late 1800's for both humans, as well as animals, with these smaller examples typically used for humans.
For hundreds of years it was believed that bleeding out some of the "bad" blood would help a person recover from illness or injury.
These small instruments were also known as 'thumb lancets' since you could hold it in one hand and push the case halves apart with your thumb.
The MAW instrument has a
slightly raised
center with 2 sharpened edges to
give it good rigidity
and is the typical ‘fleam’ shape.
The ARNOLD instrument is more of a typical scalpel with one sharpened edge.

in very good condition with no cracks or chips in the scales.
The hinge
s are
in very good working order.
The Steel blade
s are
very sharp !
The
instrument
s are
approx. 3-1/2"
and 4-1/2”L
in the full open position.
AND, both instruments come in a Shagreen leather covered carrying case.
One instrument has an owner name on it.
This is an
Excellent example of a 'maker-marked' instrument
