A box with two phrenological illustrations, France, circa 1810-1815
An unique example of a box made in carboard and papiermaché with two illustrations showing phrenological scenes preserving a manuscrit compass made at the time, circa 1810-1815. The box and its compass are datable from the Napoleonic period.
The upper side shows a phrenologist explaining with a skull in his hands the different parts of the skull and their functions in the human spirits.
The lower side showns "organes cérébraux par le Docteur Gall".
Some accidents and lacks at the two phrenological scenes.
Both sides are marked "déposé à la Bibliothèque impériale".
The compass is well preserved and work perfectly.
